Corriente Socialista Democrática Cubana Description: Led by Manuel Cuesta Morúa, this organization pushes for a lift of the US economic embargo, the release of political prisoners, peaceful democratic reform, national reconciliation and the transition to a system that promotes a mixed economy, political pluralism, social justice, as well as respect for fundamental freedoms and rights. URL: http://www.corriente.org/ (Spanish) Cuban Committee for Human Rights Description: Founded in 1978 by Gustavo Arcos Bergnes (1926-2006), the CCHR is one of the first human rights organizations established on the island. The CCHR declared itself a follower of the teachings of the Soviet dissident and human rights movement, at that time led by Andrei Sakharov and Elena Boner. The CCHR defined itself as a civil rights movement. URL: http://www.fiu.edu/~fcf/ccpdh.html (English) Fundación Lawton de Derechos Humanos Description: Founded in 1997, and headed by Dr. Oscar Elías Biscet González, the FLDH promotes human rights and the right to life. It opposes abortion, euthanasia, and execution by firing squad. A brief history and an explanation of the FLDH’s goals are found on the Free Dr. Biscet! web site, dedicated to its founder. He was jailed for a 25 year term in April 2003. URL: http://www.free-biscet.org/ (English) Movimiento Cristiano Liberación Description: Founded by Oswaldo Payá Sardiñas in June 1989, this organization promotes a national dialogue with all sectors of society, including Cuban exiles, freedom of expression and association, amnesty for political prisoners, and other actions to avoid civil war and foreign intervention. Payá Sardiñas gave life to the Varela Project, a proposal for a referendum to advance democratic changes, based on a provision within the Cuban constitution, and the National Dialogue, a proposal for a national dialogue on a peaceful transition to democracy and a market oriented economy. This organization is affiliated with the International Christian Democrats. Its website provides information about the PDCC’s history, humanitarian aid activities, news, articles, and documents, including its political platform, documents from other dissident organizations, the Catholic Church, and other national and international institutions. URL: http://www.pdc-cuba.org/ (Spanish) Partido Socialdemócrata de Cuba (PSC) Description: Founded in July 1996, and headed by Vladimiro Roca, this party promotes human rights, including the right to self-employment, and the right by Cubans to invest in the national economy, the empowerment of civil society and national reconciliation. The PSC belongs to the Socialist International. This web site provides the PSC’s political platform, information about human rights violations in the island, articles, documents and news.
